Guilin Weather in July

Season: Summer
Overview:
1. Guilin’s weather in July features hot temperatures and high humidity, especially during midday hours.
2. July brings abundant rainfall, mostly in the form of brief downpours.
3. July is not a good time to visit Guilin, considering it has unfavorable weather and is the summer vacation period in China.

High Temperatures

July is one of the hottest months in Guilin, with daytime highs ranging from 30 to 36°C (86-97°F). They may reach 38 to 40°C (100-104°F) on some days, with the period from 10:00 to 16:00 uncomfortably hot. Moreover, combined with humidity, the perceived temperature can feel significantly higher than the actual reading. Walking long distances under the sun, especially on the road without shade, can quickly become exhausting. Besides, the duration of hot weather in July is quite long: You may see many consecutive days with daily highs above 33°C (91°F).

After the sunset, temperatures do not drop significantly, and the night remains somewhat muggy. Nighttime lows hover between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius (75-84 degrees Fahrenheit).

If the heat feels overwhelming, there are reliable escape options:
(1) Longji Rice Terraces sit at a higher elevation, where average temperatures are typically 5-8°C (9-14°F) lower than downtown Guilin. The mountain breeze and lush green scenery provide noticeable relief.
(2) Reed Flute Cave and Silver Cave maintain a year-round temperature of around 20°C (68°F), offering a natural cooling effect comparable to air conditioning.

Besides, rainy or heavily overcast days also bring temporary cooling. After strong rainfall, daytime highs may fall to under 30°C (86°F), and thick cloud cover blocks some solar radiation, making outdoor explorations more manageable.

Rainy Season

Rainy Weather in July
Rainy Weather in July
Guilin in July receives ample rainfall, with an average precipitation of 231 mm over 16 rainy days. Although the monthly rainfall total is high, most rain comes in the form of intense downpours or thunderstorms that usually last one to two hours rather than the entire day, resulting in a limited impact on most outdoor activities.

However, heavy showers can significantly influence water-based activities:
(1) They may raise river levels, causing the temporary suspension of bamboo rafting on the Yulong River.
(2) Cruise routes on the Li River may be shortened if water conditions become unsafe.
(3) Heavy rain sometimes stirs up the river’s surface, clouding the water and diminishing the scenery.

Light rain can bring you a special urban sightseeing experience: Visit Elephant Trunk Hill in misty weather, and you can totally enjoy a poetic atmosphere with a touch of classical Chinese landscape paintings.

Visitors should be particularly aware that although Guilin does not usually face typhoon landfalls directly, it can be affected to some extent, bringing localized heavy downpours and strong winds. Therefore, travelers are advised to monitor weather alerts and avoid river activities during severe weather warnings.

Humid Climate

In July, Guilin experiences a pretty humid climate. The average humidity level comes to 79%. When the temperature reaches over 30°C (86°F), and the daily humidity tops 70%, the weather may feel like 40°C (104°F) or higher. Plus, clothes may stick to the skin, and even short walks can leave you sweaty.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

July has long daylight hours in Guilin, roughly 13 hours on average, which seems ideal for sightseeing. In practice, high midday temperatures limit how much of that daylight is comfortably usable. Thus, it’s best to arrange only one or two key scenic spots in one day.

UV radiation is pretty strong this month, with maximum UV index levels reaching 11. Moreover, while rafting on the Li River or Yulong River, sunlight reflects off the water, increasing the risk of sunburn. For this reason, rafting is best scheduled in the morning or close to sunset when UV intensity is a bit lower.

Travel Advice and Tips

July coincides with the summer holiday in China, significantly surging the domestic travel rush. Guilin, as a popular tourist city, of course, attracts numerous visitors during this period. You may experience overcrowded attractions, expensive flight tickets, and hotel rates, which will definitely affect your travel experience. Combined with the high temperatures and rainfall, July is actually a month that is recommended to avoid visiting. However, if you only have time during this period, you should note that:

1. Book both hotels and air tickets ahead of time to ensure a smooth trip.
2. Guilin’s hot climate in July makes it especially suitable for water-based and cooling activities. For example, Bamboo rafting along the Yulong River offers refreshing breezes and scenic karst landscapes. You can play in water and get some relief from the heat at local streams like Longtan River, highly recommended for family tours. Other summer resorts include Reed Flute Cave, Seven Star Cave, Longji Rice Terraces and Mao’er Mountain
3. Always remember to check the forecast, especially if you plan a river activity. Avoid rafting and hiking in the mountains during heavy rain warnings.
4. Limit outdoor exposure at midday to prevent heat exhaustion. Instead, you are recommended to visit outdoor attractions before 10:00 and after 14:00. Don’t be upset even if it’s dark outside. The Two Rivers and Four Lakes Scenic Spot offers beautiful night views and cultural performances on the water, making evening sightseeing a comfortable alternative to daytime heat.
