Warm Overall with Cool Nighttime

Warm Temperatures in May
Guilin in May enjoys a pleasant climate, with a moderate temperature difference between day and night. During daytime periods, the weather is quite warm, with temperatures ranging from 27 to 32°C (81-90°F). Sometimes, visitors may even feel a bit hot, especially in mid-day hours by late month when the highest temperature can even reach 35°C (95°F), showing the traces of early summer. Luckily, the morning and night hours send cool feelings, with daily lows of 17-25°C (63-77°F).

However, it’s worth noting that Guilin in May is not warm every day. When heavy downpours occur, the daily temperatures range between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius (64-72 degrees Fahrenheit). Besides, the weather may change quickly in a single day: sometimes it drizzles or rains heavily in the morning but turns sunny in the afternoon, making the apparent temperature turns for notable cool to comfortably warm. Therefore, it’s a wise move to wear layers to adapt to the unstable weather.

The Peak of Rainy Season

In May, Guilin receives the richest rainfall throughout the year, which is 352 mm over 19 rainy days on average. Influenced by strong monsoon winds, heavy downpours occur frequently. Fortunately, they won’t last for a whole day, and usually fall predominantly during the early mornings, rarely impacting your daytime travel schedules. In addition, heavy rainfall is sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and even hail.

Despite the high intensity of rainfall, the terrain slopes and a dense river network facilitate rapid drainage. So don’t worry, it’s unlikely to see travelers being stranded in hotels for all day.

Abundant rainfall contributes to plentiful river flows, but heavy downpours may stir the river and cause the water to turn yellowish.

High Humidity Air

May is one of the most humid months in Guilin, with the average humidity level of 81%. This makes the perceived temperature higher. Particularly, during breaks in the rainy climate when the temperature is usually high, the air is still heavy with moisture, making you feel rather muggy – almost like sitting in a sauna. If you plan to go out in the first half of the day, your clothes might already feel slightly damp by lunchtime, so it’s essential to pack a few quick-dry T-shirts.

Sunshine Hours and Daytime Hours

Although Guilin in May experiences frequent rainfall and limited sunshine hours, about 4 hours per day on average, the sun remains intensely strong with high ultraviolet radiation levels. Peak UV intensity occurs at 11.

Besides, Guilin enjoys ample daylight hours in May, ranging from 13 to 13.5 hours per day on average. Ample daylight allows visitors to enjoy a relatively relaxed itinerary, sparing them the fatigue of rushing between attractions, given the considerable distances between Guilin’s scenic spots.

Two River and Four Lakes Attraction
Of course. May is one of the best months to visit Guilin.

Despite the intense rainfall, it won’t affect the outdoor activities by large most of the time, but will cause the river water level to rise, offering a stunning view and a wonderful river cruise.

Packing List for Guilin Travel in May 2026

May Wear in Guilin
Upper Clothing: Breathable and quick-dry T-shirts are perfect for daily outings. Considering the humid climate, you are recommended to pack more of them for changes. To deal with cool moments and intense sunshine, a light jacket is essential.

Bottom Clothing: It’s optional to wear shorts, skirts or summer pants. But if you plan to explore the natural scenic spots, thin long pants are more suitable, as they can protect you from insect bites.

Footwear: It’s ok to wear comfortable sandals or sneakers. Considering the rainy season in May, it’s best to choose non-slip ones. If you decide to take a bamboo raft, sandals can be a more suitable choice.

Accessories:
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat can protect you from sunburn.
To deal with downpours and intense sunshine, a dual-purpose umbrella is highly advisable. Besides, a raincoat tends to be more convenient during activities like taking a bamboo raft on rainy days.
Hot and humid weather causes insects to breed, so don’t forget to bring insect repellent.

Travel Advice and Tips

1. It’s always helpful to check the weather forecast regularly to adjust your clothing and travel plans in May with changeable weather.
2. Early May coincides with the May Day holiday, one of the longest public holidays in China. So you can imagine how crowded and popular the tourist city is during this period. For a better travel experience, it’s best to avoid this holiday. If you fail to do so, try to book a hotel and flights at least one month earlier.
3. Guilin’s renowned sites, including Elephant Trunk Hill, the Twin Pagodas of the Sun and Moon, the Li River, and Silver Cave, are exceptionally popular, even in the off-peak May. Therefore, it’s advisable to book tickets in advance, particularly for weekends and the May Day holiday period.
4. The essence of Guilin’s landscapes lies in cruising the Li River, admiring the karst views along both banks. With water levels just right in most May, good quality waters reflect the towering peaks perfectly. However, you are advised to avoid days with heavy rain, as the water may turn yellow and less attractive, as mentioned above.
5. If you want to explore the local pastoral scenery, the Longji Rice Terraces is highly recommended. The fields in May are flooded, with fresh green crops. On sunny days, layers upon layers of terraces shimmer in the sunlight, appearing like gleaming ribbons. Without sunlight, the terraces transform into mirrors reflecting the sky.
