A Bit of Hot Temperatures

Generally, Guilin in September still feels a bit hot. The first half of the month carries leftover summer heat: high temperatures above 35°C (95°F) remain common, especially during sunny spells, and the peak temperature can even reach as high as 38°C (100°F). By the end of the month, cooler air masses bring some relief, with daytime highs ranging from 27 to 34°C (81-93°F), making outdoor exploration more comfortable.

Fortunately, it’s good to know that the heat won’t last for long per day and temperatures drop rapidly after sunset, with nighttime lows of 22-26 degrees Celsius (72-79 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus, night walks along the river become quite enjoyable.

If you are sensitive to hot temperatures, the weather in mountainous areas is several degrees lower than in urban areas, making them worth visiting.

Occasional Rain

Guilin’s rainfall in September decreases substantially compared with summer, with an average total of 82 mm from 8 rainy days. Rain this month is usually brief and does not last all day. After rain, the mountain and river scenery become especially attractive. Mist rises between limestone peaks, and river valleys appear soft and layered, which is perfect for photography.

Typhoons rarely have a direct impact on Guilin. In certain years, outer circulation bands may bring strong rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. Therefore, checking official weather alerts remains important during this peak typhoon season.

Humidity Levels

Humidity in September remains relatively high, with the average level of 73 %. Sometimes after rainfall, the air can feel steamy and sticky. Even on dry days with high temperatures, moisture in the air may make you sweat quickly during outdoor activities. Staying hydrated and taking short indoor breaks during hotter periods is quite important.

Sunshine Hours and Daytime Hours

With fewer rainy days, sunshine hours increase gradually, averaging 6 hours per day. Particular attention should be paid to ultraviolet intensity, as UV rays begin to become intense from 10:00 and reach the peak UV index of 10. Sun protection is necessary even on partly cloudy days.

Although there are about 12 hours of daylight, actual comfortable sightseeing time is shorter due to midday heat. A smart schedule improves the experience significantly:
(1) Arrange outdoor activities from 7:00 to 11:00 and after 16:00 to avoid the heat.
(2) Visit indoor attractions such as the Guilin Museum or limestone caves like Reed Flute Cave and Seven Star Cave during the hotter 11:00-16:00.
(3) Check the exact sunset time and take a raft along the Li River

Packing List for Guilin Tour in September

Guilin Clothes in September
Upper Clothing: A breathable T-shirt paired with a light overshirt works well. If you plan to stay overnight in mountainous areas such as Longji Rice Terraces, bring a light jacket or windbreaker since temperatures are lower than in the city.

Bottom Clothing: Opt for light long pants or shorts, depending on daily forecasts. In mountain regions, waterproof hiking pants are practical.

Footwear: We recommend comfortable sneakers with a good grip, especially for a light hiking tour. If you plan to take a raft, it’s best to wear waterproof shoes.

Accessories:
Physical and chemical sun-protection measures are both important, so don’t forget to pack sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen.
Insect repellent is quite useful when you spend a lot of time outside.
Due to occasional rain, an umbrella and a raincoat are practical.

Travel Advice and Tips

1. Avoid Weekends and Mid-Autumn Festival
Even during shoulder season, visitors may experience increased domestic travel during weekends. Plus, the Mid-Autumn Festival Holiday in 2026 falls from the 25th to the 27th of September, bringing short-term crowd spikes. So, try to avoid them if possible.

2. Monitor Weather Forecasts
The weather in September can be unstable sometimes. Always pay special attention to updated forecasts, especially before heading to rivers or mountains.

3. Experience the Li River Early
The Li River is the heart of Guilin’s scenery. In September, the water often appears clear and jade-green, with excellent underwater visibility. Early morning bamboo rafting between 7:30 and 9:30 allows you to avoid tour group peaks and heat to enjoy peaceful river views.

4. Visit Elephant Trunk Hill at the Right Time
Elephant Trunk Hill is a must-visit spot in Guilin. Early morning and sunset times provide soft lighting for photography. September is also the osmanthus blooming season, and you may catch its fragrance drifting through riverside parks.

5. See Golden Fields at Longji Rice Terraces
Mid to late September marks the harvest season at Longji Terraces, making the scenery stunning. Under sunlight, ripe rice turns golden and sways like waves. You are highly recommended to stay overnight to catch sunrise views, though a light jacket is necessary to stay comfortable. Rainy days can make stone paths slippery, yet misty terraces create dramatic scenes.
